On a research trip last summer, I found a previously unidentified thirteenth-century manuscript in a library in Poznan, Poland, and recognized that it contains the writings of a late twelfth-century monk named Engelhard of Langheim. ![]() The history of bookmaking hasn't been without its challenges, but never was its craft as painstaking as during the era of illuminated manuscripts. A book of such a size would have been time consuming and expensive to produce. Evidently, spending years laying out a single gold-leafed page isn't all it's cracked up to be. ![]()
